i may be on my own here, but i think the Sugababes are the best thing to happen to pop music for a long time.

strangely beautiful album full of country and odd folk-style songs.

"sister rosetta goes before us" sounds like it was written by a 150 year old cajun with russian family ties.

This album is relentless and feels like being beaten to death with a guitar. It's only got 3 tracks on it, the shortest of which is 12mins long. It starts off quite floatly and ambient, then stamps it's boots of rock all over your face.
Definitely the heavier end of the post-rock genre, which I like. A lot of these bands tend to be quite twittery and jolly, but these guys opt for something much darker. If you're a fan of this kind of music, this album is essential.

i'm reviewing this as a warning to all forumers. if you hear this on the radio, switch over immediately. if you're a woman it will make you barren, if you're a man it'll make your nob fall off. its the aural equivalent of the hunchback of notre dame.

truly, truly appalling.

Amazing band with probably one of the most talented drummers in the UK. Kind of a cross between Mogwai, Sigur Ros and what Muse would be if they were not so commercial.

They seem quite down to earth - they don't even have an image!!!!!

They're also from Manchester. Huzzah!
Debashish Bhattacharya - Calcutta Slide Guitar

I'm a big fan of Hindustani/North Indian classical music, especially the deeply emotional and highly improvised ragas. I'm also a big fan of slide guitar, especially delta blues.
This man combines both sickeningly well, Ry Cooder must be green with envy.
This is some of the most emotional guitar playing I have ever heard in my life. If you have even a passing interest in either of the styles mentioned; if you play guitar or simply wish to open your mind to something a bit special, get this album.

Phenomenal.

I must admit I am by no means a connoisseur of Indian music, but upon the recommendation of the squid I thought I would widen my horizons. I can't see myself listening to it all that much, but it was undoubtedly an interesting experience to listen to and one that I could recommend. It also features some sick tabla playing.

My real life Daddy really likes Ali Farka Toure (RIP) (try "in the heart of the moon" with Toumani Diabate if you haven't heard it), so I got him this for Christmas as Toure and Bhattacharya seem often to be mentioned in the same breath despite the obvious difference in styles. Went down a treat, so thanks Emo, and the one listen I had of it was breathtaking even for an uncultured philistine like me

As with first single Worried About Ray they have talent, but they get on my nerves.
Mentally filed alongside the Kaiser Chiefs.
Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace - Foo Fighters

This is only the second time I've listened to the album so I reserve the right to change my review when I have had the chance to listen a few more times.
Dave Grohl has said in interviews that he wanted to expand the album out of just the trade mark Foo Fighters sound and that is certainly true. It sounds very different to "One By One's" heavily compressed crunchy sound and is a bit more 3 dimensional than "In your Honours" one album of quiet and one album of loud formula. In a way it reminds me of the more AM Radio Rock sounds of "There Is Nothing Left To Lose"
You will find a more classic rock approach to this album which features more in the way of acoustic guitar, guitar solos and piano than previous albums.
One thing that really jumped out at me is how much more dynamic range it has than most modern albums. The quiet bits are really quiet and the loud bits are bloody loud!
the angry mob - menswear

and there i was thinking menswear had fallen down the Britpop Black Hole along with sleeper and dodgy back in '98. i'll give them 2 out of 10 just for old times sake.

sounds a bit like the kaiser chiefs.

now, i likes me a bit of Wichita Linesman but this makes me feel physically sick.

4 and a half hours (or so it seems) of syrupy nonsense with some of the most ball-clenchingly high pitched vocals ever recorded.

pass me ma buckit.

At last a new rave album that actually is ravey (rather than just indie with keyboards and glowsticks).
Some good scratchy bleepy noises perfect for us venerable pop music pensioners who enjoyed acid house the first time around.
Like all good dance music the album is named after some knobs that can be found on a synthesizer.
I was a bit sceptical when I downloaded this that it was going to be all hype and no content as the group are flavour of the month due to their association with The Arctic Monkeys (remember Dustins Bar Mitzvah… ergh) , but I was very pleasantly surprised.
It's available on e-music so if you have an account get and download it, and if you don't then get an e-music account then download it!
